An Effective Leader Is Courageous
Courage is the intangible leadership quality that creates greatness. It shows up when a person faces severe pressure, conflict, or adversity with grace and dignity. In fact, all exceptional leaders seem to have plenty of it.
But how does someone acquire courage? There is no simple formula for this. However, I’ve concluded that an individual’s persistent courage under trying circumstances stems from spiritual strength. As Cicero famously said, “A man of courage is also full of faith.” Therefore, those who believe in God are better equipped to face adversity directly and, consequently, inspire others by doing so.
Now, let’s explore some of the ways leaders demonstrate their inner strength.
Demonstrating Inner Strength
First, courageous leaders don’t suffer from the crippling need to be loved by everyone. For example, they aren’t afraid to say “no” to unreasonable requests and demands placed on them or to take a firm stand on important issues. When such issues arise, courageous leaders won’t remain on the sidelines by staying quiet. Instead, they strongly express their opinions. Although others may dislike and ridicule them from time to time, they continue to stand up for their beliefs.
Second, leaders have the courage to pick themselves up after defeat and work even harder than before. Successfully leading an organization every day is a tough game. Consequently, you won’t always meet your objectives. Occasionally, you’ll get in hot water with your boss or colleagues. Even those with a high batting average will strike out periodically.
I’ve never known a successful business leader who didn’t experience at least one incident of serious failure in their career. Good leaders have the courage to take risks, to face failure, and to learn from each mistake. When we look at failure from this perspective, it becomes a stepping stone to the future.
